“The cast worked off one another brilliantly,…The audience went away with a spring in the step." The Times ( L’amore industrioso )

" David Chernaik conducted this performance...with some verve, his orchestra wallowing in the rather gorgeous textures of the music...Chernaik has a knack for unearthing winners... " The Times (Goyescas)

The Apollo Chamber Orchestra has performed opera to great acclaim, in staged performances at Opera Holland Park, and in concert. The orchestra gave the first modern UK performances of L’amore industrioso, a delightful opera buffa by the 18 th century Portuguese composer João de Sousa Carvalho, and Goyescas by Enrique Granados.

David Chernaik discovered the manuscript for L’amore industrioso in the Ajuda Palace Library in Lisbon, and edited the opera for performance. It is a superb example of the style of Italian comic opera popular in the 18 th century, and from which Mozart learned when writing his own Italian operas.

Goyescas is a wonderfully tuneful, dramatic and evocative work which is rarely performed. This may be because the opera is only one hour long, and so needs to be paired with another short work, or because the existing performing material is not suitable for performance. David Chernaik has edited the work for performance from the original source material, which means that this wonderful and unjustly neglected work can now be performed as the composer intended.
